Caveman Falls or Twin Falls

Have you ever been to Caveman Falls, aka Twin Falls, on Maui? Most people who drive the Road to Hana know about Twin Falls, and its popular fruit stand. The beautifully landscaped walking trail leads you to the falls. There’s an upper and lower level where you can see the waterfalls and swim in the pools. But not many people venture further up to visit Caveman Falls. Probably because there is a gate blocking the trail. You can go beyond the gate on your own, but there is a warning sign posted that says;

Experienced hikers only beyond this point.

Hazardous conditions may include:

  •  Flash flooding even when it is sunny
  •  Slippery and muddy conditions
  •  Rock slides
  • Fallen trees and branches
  • Mosquitoes
  • Wild pigs
  • Narrow trails requiring sure footing and balance
  • Crossing through water and walking up slippery stream beds

The hike is just over a mile and takes about 30 minuets. Charlie and I ventured there, back in 2014, when I was needing to get photo references for my book “The Art Of Painting In Acrylic”, in which I have a step-by-step lesson on how to paint Twin Falls. At the time I didn’t realize that particular water fall was actually called Caveman Falls. It was only just recently that I learned the true name.

I’ve painted many versions of this beautiful waterfall in various sizes, in both oil and acrylic. My newest version is titled with the proper name, “Caveman Falls”.  “Twin Falls”, the version I used for my book, looks quite a bit different than this new one. Which one is your favorite?
